Prof. Dr. Marcus Huijbers (VU)
Prof. dr. M. (Marcus) Huibers is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Experimental Psychotherapy at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with a cross-appointment as Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, United States). He holds an MA in clinical psychology (Utrecht University), an MSc in epidemiology (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and a PhD in medical sciences (Maastricht University).
His research focuses mainly on psychotherapeutic interventions for depression, suicidality and personality disorders. He conducts randomized trials to investigate the (cost-)effectiveness of psychotherapy and study predictors and moderators of treatment response and mechanisms of change, with the ultimate goal to develop strategies for personalized mental health care. In 2014, he founded the Experimental Psychotherapy Lab Amsterdam, where experimental designs are used to isolate and manipulate therapeutic procedures to assess the causal effect on processes and outcome.
He has authored more than 175 publications, and has supervised 15 PhD students. In 2006, he was the first European to become a Beck Institute Scholar, an American award for ‘future leaders in the field of cognitive therapy’, and received post-doctoral training at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia. He works as a licensed psychotherapist at NPI (Center for Personality Disorders) in Amsterdam, and chairs the Dutch Regulatory College for Psychological Health Care Professions. He is also a culinary writer for De Volkskrant, the largest quality newspaper of The Netherlands.
